Withdrawal button
What is a withdrawal button?
A withdrawal button is the on-screen function that lets a consumer withdraw from a contract concluded through an online interface as easily as it was concluded. It is labelled “withdraw from contract here”, stays visible throughout the withdrawal period, and leads to a short confirmation screen that ends in a “confirm withdrawal” button. The trader then sends an acknowledgement on a durable medium.
Example
A monthly subscription takes two minutes to start online. On day nine the customer decides against it. In their account they find a button reading “withdraw from contract here”, press it, give their name, the service and an email address on the next screen, and press “confirm withdrawal”. An email arrives with the date and time of the withdrawal. The warehouse stops the next parcel and accounting knows from which day.
The alternative the rule removes is familiar: a contact form, an answer two days later, and a request to call during office hours.
Why it matters for a business
The requirement comes from Directive (EU) 2023/2673. Its title is about distance financial services, but the article it inserts into the consumer rights directive reaches every distance contract concluded through an online interface that carries a right of withdrawal. It applies from 19 June 2026; Bulgaria brings it in through amendments to its Consumer Protection Act passed by parliament in September 2026, so the start date and the exact wording are checked against the published text.
The principle is that leaving should be as easy as joining. The detail follows from it: a legible button labelled “withdraw from contract here” or an equally unambiguous wording, reachable throughout the withdrawal period; a second step where the customer gives a name, identifies the contract and leaves an address for the reply; a “confirm withdrawal” button; and an acknowledgement on a durable medium carrying the content of the withdrawal, the date and the time. What separates it from an ordinary form is that pressing it is a legal act, not a message.
What to ask
- Where does the button sit, and is it visible without logging in?
- What is the exact label, and in which language?
- What is recorded when it is pressed — contract, customer, date and time?
- Who is notified, and how is the acknowledgement sent?
- Is the withdrawal connected to the order system and to invoicing?
The function belongs in the customer account and in the order flow, which is part of online store development.
