Website builder
What is a website builder?
A website builder is a paid online service where a site is assembled from ready-made blocks in the browser, with no code written, for a monthly or yearly fee. Hosting, updates and the certificate come with the subscription. It works for a small site of a few pages, and stops where a link to warehouse software, a checkout of your own design, or a move to another platform begins.
Example
A photography studio launches five pages: home, gallery, prices, about, contact. The subscription is €16 a month, the theme is ready and the domain points at it within an hour. For that job a builder is the right answer — the site is live in a week and costs under €200 a year. The amounts are illustrative.
Two years later the same studio wants a shop with 2,000 items, stock levels from its warehouse program and an invoice with every order. Now the arithmetic reverses. Builders rarely have a direct link to warehouse software, and where one exists it runs through a third-party app with a fee of its own. Pages holding hundreds of products load slowly, because the code underneath is shared by every customer of the platform and cannot be rebuilt for your case.
Add three apps at €12 a month to the €16 and the monthly bill is €52, or €624 a year — without the site getting faster or the data getting easier to take out.
Why it matters for a business
A builder swaps an upfront investment for rent. That is a good trade while the site is a shop window, and a poor one once the site becomes a working tool with a catalogue, orders, integrations and traffic worth defending. The second difference is ownership: a subscription buys access, not an asset.
The third is the part search depends on. The editor writes the markup for you, and when a page has to be restructured for speed or for search, the markup itself is usually out of reach. So the comparison worth making is not the monthly fee but the CMS, the data and the ceiling — and projects that reach the ceiling move onto a platform of their own.
What to ask
- What will the site be doing in two years: a shop window, a catalogue, or a shop with integrations?
- What does the subscription cost together with the apps you will actually use?
- Can content and customer data be exported in a readable format?
- Can page structure and speed be changed when search results say they should be?
- What happens to addresses and redirects if the site moves elsewhere?
