Campaign objective
What is a campaign objective?
A campaign objective is the choice made at the start of every Meta campaign that tells the system what to optimise for: awareness, traffic, engagement, leads, app promotion or sales. The objective decides who the ad goes looking for and how the result is counted, which is why the wrong one buys cheap reactions instead of enquiries.
Example
A window company spends €600 on a traffic objective. It gets 3,000 clicks at €0.20 and 6 enquiries — €100 per enquiry (600 ÷ 6). The next month the same €600 runs on a leads objective with a form-submitted event in place. Clicks fall to 900 and rise to €0.67 each, but the enquiries reach 24 — €25 apiece (600 ÷ 24).
Nothing about the advertising changed: same photo, same words, same budget. What changed is the problem the system was asked to solve.
Why it matters for a business
An ad system finds exactly what it is paid to find. A traffic objective finds people who click, including people who click out of habit. A sales objective finds people who resemble those who bought before them — but to find them it needs events coming back from the site. So choosing an objective is not picking from a menu; it depends on what you have set up to be tracked.
The objective is fixed when the campaign is created and cannot be edited afterwards: a different objective means a new campaign, and the learning starts from zero. An ad set leaves the learning phase at roughly 50 optimisation events a week. A campaign with three orders a month cannot be optimised for orders; it is optimised for the more frequent step before them, an add to basket or an enquiry. The number that settles the argument is the cost per lead.
What to ask
- What is the objective of each live campaign, and why that one?
- Which event is being optimised for, and does it happen often enough for the system to learn?
- What is the action you actually want — a call, a form, an order?
- Is the result judged by Meta’s own numbers or by your orders?
- How long does an ad set stay untouched so it can leave the learning phase?
In social media management the objective is chosen after the conversation about what counts as a result, never before it.
