## What are vanity metrics?

Vanity metrics are the numbers that look good in a report but change no decision — followers, likes, impressions, video views. They climb with budget and with luck, do not connect to revenue, and rarely explain why sales fell. They are useful only as context around a metric that reaches money: an enquiry, an order, the cost of a customer.

**Example**

A beauty salon runs a giveaway. It hands out €300 of vouchers and puts €200 behind the post. Followers jump from 4,200 to 9,600 — 5,400 new ones at €0.09 each (500 ÷ 5,400). In a report that number looks excellent.

Appointments booked that month: 11. The month before: 11. Three months later the posts reach fewer people than they used to, because the audience is full of people who came for a voucher. The €500 bought a number that does not translate into revenue.

**Why it matters for a business**

Vanity metrics are not a lie; they are a misuse. Impressions are useful when you are measuring how often one person sees an ad. Likes are useful as a comparison between two posts published the same day. The problem starts when a number like that opens the monthly report and takes the place of a decision.

There is an expensive side effect, too. A team judged on reactions starts making content for reactions — light, loud, forgettable. So the report opens with two or three numbers tied to money, and engagement rate stays where it belongs: as an explanation, not as a target.

**How to improve it**

- Pick one number per campaign that is counted in money: an enquiry, an order, revenue.
- Tag the links you post so you can see what came from social.
- Track the same event every month, so there is something to compare against.
- Ask for a chain rather than a figure: impressions → profile visits → site → enquiry.
- Keep the vanity numbers in the report, but below the line, as context. In social media management the report starts from the result, then uses the rest of the numbers to explain why it looks the way it does.
